A customer recently contacted us as they had created a custom field of type checkbox on a record and wanted to make completion of that checkbox mandatory. 

This isn't possible. If it were, it would mean that the value represented by the checkbox had to be true for every record as leaving it blank wouldn't be an option.

If you need a yes/no value to be mandatory you should create a picklist offering just those two values.
